Rebel Rifle Competes at 2017 Winter Airgun Championships
Dec. 6, 2017

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Five members of the Ole Miss Rifle team competed in the 2017 Winter Air Gun Championships held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado December 1-3. This open competition is the largest air rifle match in the country with 177 females and 127 male competitors.

International Air Rifle

In an international air rifle competition, decimal scoring is used, which awards points in one 10th increments instead of whole numbers. NCAA team scoring is done using whole numbers.  The only time decimal scoring is used is in the NCAA competition for individual finals.

Jessica Haig fired a personal best 412.0 on the second day.  Her two-day total score of 821.6 placed 24th among all women competitors.  Freshman Emily Cock’s 819.6 placed 32nd.

Junior Women’s Competition

In the junior women’s competition, open to all competitors born in 1997 and later, Cock placed 18th. Kamilla Kisch scored a personal best both days, firing 407.9 and 409.7 for an 817.6 total, good for 22nd place among junior women. Abby Buesseler also had a personal best, tallying 411.6 in the first match and an 817.2 total good for 27th.  Harley Gardner finished 32nd with an 815.0.

Rebel Alum Alison Weisz Earns Top 10 Finish

Rebel alum Alison Weisz, who completed her college career in 2017, placed seventh overall with an 833.3 total. This competition was the first of a two-part selection for the U.S. Team to compete in the World Championships next summer.  Weisz is still in contention, but will need to make up a few points to qualify for the team.

Marsha’s Minute

“Overall, I am pleased with how we performed,” said head coach Marsha Beasley. Colorado Springs is a challenging place to shoot due to the high altitude. That we had three Ole Miss shooters turn in personal bests is remarkable. The sheer size of this match makes it a very different competition than our regular season matches. I think this will prove valuable experience for us as the season continues.”
