CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
The Ole Miss soccer team fell at No. 4 Virginia Saturday, 3-0, in the season-opener for both schools. The Rebels continue their swing through the state Monday with a Labor Day date with James Madison. Game time is set for 5 p.m. ET in Harrisonburg.
In the first ever meeting between the two schools, UVA jumped on the board less than 18 minutes into the game on an unassisted goal by Lori Lindsey. The Rebel defense then held the Cavaliers in-check until the 80:37 mark, when Lindsey added her second score, assisted by Kelly Worden. With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Alyssa Benitez scored on a one-timer set up by Laura Gaworecki.
Senior goalkeeper Melinda Smith collected a career-high 12 saves for Ole Miss. The 12 saves was also the sixth-highest single-game total ever by a Rebel goalee.
"Our defense played well," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "Melinda had a big time game for us. We certainly had our opportunities. Despite the loss, it was very encouraging for our team."
Facing the second-highest ranked opponent in school history, Ole Miss picked up shots from Anna Sanders, Amy Sample and Kristal Menard in the game. The Rebels drop to 4-3 all-time in season-openers.
