HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Facing some stout offseason competition, Ole Miss posted an 0-1-1 mark in spring soccer action Sunday at a Huntsville tournament. The Rebels tied the Region III ODP team 1-1 and fell to ACC power Clemson 1-0.
After a scoreless first half, Ole Miss jumped on top of the Region III squad on a Kristal Menard goal. A foul to Brittney Potts awarded the Rebels a free kick, setting up Menard, a two-time All-SEC first team pick, with the 18-yard scoring strike.
The Region team, which is comprised of the South's top youth talent, answered the Ole Miss score shortly thereafter, and the match finished knotted at a goal apiece.
"The Region team was young but very talented," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman."They created a great challenge for us and made the game very competitive. We came out very flat in the first half and definitely did not play up to our potential."
NCAA Tournament teams faced off in the second match, as both Ole Miss and Clemson have earned tourney bids each of the last two seasons. The Rebel offense failed to capitalize on some key scoring chances, and the Tigers prevailed on a goal midway through the second half.
"Clemson is very talented and easily the toughest opponent on our spring schedule," Holeman said. "After a mediocre showing in the first game, the team responded very well by playing with intensity and focus in the second. We were able to produce several great scoring opportunities but just couldn't find the back of the net. This game served as a good tool to let us know where we stand this spring."
The Rebels drop to 1-2-2 in full-squad matches this spring and continue their offseason Saturday against in-state rival Southern Miss. The match will be held in Jackson, Miss., as an exhibition showcase for a regional youth tournament.
