Soccer Season Preview: Forwards
Aug. 8, 2017
OXFORD, Miss. – As the days continue to count down towards the start of the 2017 Ole Miss soccer regular season, OleMissSports.com’s position preview continues Tuesday featuring the forwards. Four letterwinners off last year’s squad, along with three newcomers, will lead the attacking line this fall.
Junior CeCe Kizer, the 2015 SEC Freshman of the Year, is back to lead the forwards after finishing second on the team in points last season with five goals and six assists. The Overland Park, Kansas native has 19 goals in her two-year career, and is responsible for 45 points thus far.
“CeCe Kizer is back and has had a great summer,” head coach Matthew Mott said. “CeCe is going to be one of the most dominant forwards in our league. She’s fast, quick, tenacious, and is really looking to bounce back after last year.
“She’s as good as any forward there is in our league, and I’m really excited she’s with us,” Mott added. “She’s taking on more of a leadership role, and she’s leading the way up there doing a great job for us.”
One of two forwards who saw significant playing time as a freshman last year, Alley Houghton is back for season two as a Rebel on the frontline. The Oxford native was responsible for two goals last season, including the game-winner at Kentucky.
“Alley Houghton is continuing to learn our system, and she’s doing a good job being dangerous and putting herself in good spots,” Mott said. “We look for her to continue to improve, and her minutes are only going to increase.”
Gabby Little, another sophomore returning with experience, earned the start in 11 games as a freshman in 2016. She was credited with one assist, and was a mainstay on the frontline starting the first 10 contests of the fall.
“Gabby Little is back and had a fantastic spring,” Mott said. “She played all summer with her WPSL team and has come back fit, working hard, and we’re expecting big things from her.”
Tara Sullivan, a two-year letterwinner, also brings experience among the forwards, and is fresh off a national title this summer.
“Tara Sullivan is back just off a national championship run with her WPSL team,” Mott added. “We’re really excited for Tara as she’s come in fit and working hard, and is certainly going to work to gain minutes for us.”
Among the team’s group of 12 newcomers are three freshmen who look to provide depth to the forward position. Combined, they bring loads of experience from three different states, and will compete for minutes up front.
“We have a really good crop of freshmen forwards, when you talk about Sydney Michalak, Molly Martin, and Emily Holten,” Mott said. “Those are all very good, fast, hard-working forwards who strike the ball well and put themselves in good spots. They will all be competing for playing time, and we’re excited about where they are.”
