BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Ole Miss received two SEC Western Division first-place votes and was picked to finish second in the West by the Southeastern Conference's 12 coaches in a preseason poll released by the league office Monday afternoon.
Ole Miss garnered 51 points to Auburn's 60 (10 first-place votes), with Alabama (37 points), LSU (24 points), Mississippi State (23 points) and Arkansas (21 points) rounding out the Western Division voting.
The University of Florida was predicted overall SEC Champion, edging out Tennessee by one vote, 6-5. Auburn received the other overall championship vote.
The Volunteers beat out Florida in the East, however, by receiving 56 points to the Gators' 55.
Votes were compiled on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division, though each coach was not allowed to vote for his or her own team. Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.
Tennessee captured the 2004 regular-season title, while Florida defeated the Vols to win the SEC Tournament. The Rebels made their third appearance in the last four years in the semifinals of the tournament last year.
Ole Miss will open its regular season at home against Tennessee Tech on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. after an exhibition match at Oklahoma State this Saturday, Aug. 20.
