Matt Mott Weekly Press Conference
Sept. 4, 2017

Ole Miss Soccer Head Coach Matthew Mott met with members of the media on Monday as part of his weekly press conference. Coach Mott recapped wins over High Point and Southern Miss, and previewed this weekend’s tournament action with Tulsa (Friday) and Memphis (Sunday).

Opening Statement…
"It was certainly a good weekend for us this past weekend with two good, quality wins. High Point is a very good team and has been and will do very well in their league. It was an interesting game, they set their defensive line pretty deep so it was hard for us to break down. We luckily scored two goals early in that game and then really three goals at the end to finish them off. I was happy with the way our team defended and attacked in that game and really didn't allow them many chances. Last night was kind of a rivalry game with Southern Miss, we hadn't played them a long time. The game was turned on its head early on as the goal keeper got a red card after she locked down CeCe Kizer in the box. Kizer converted on the penalty kick and they had to play with 10 men for really 86 minutes, so we were able to play a bunch of players and score some really good goals. I’m really happy with the way the team is playing, they are focusing each game and each match. This is a big weekend coming up. Tulsa was a team we battled last year and won 2-1 late, and it was a very good game. They are an excellent team out of the AAC. Then we have the Derby, that game with Memphis that is always a good one. We lost to them last year and it is back and forth with us. They are an excellent team and have some really high level players, they are really well coached and we have a lot of respect for them. We have a lot of Memphis players so it is a big time rivalry with them. We play them every spring and every fall, and it’s always a really good game. They are undefeated right now, we are undefeated right now. They play Rice on Friday night which will be a good test for them and then we square off next Sunday night. We are excited about that game; it is always a good game for us so we are excited about that coming up."

On Alley Houghton thus far…
"Big improvement for Alley Houghton, she is a firecracker. She gives us a big spark off the bench, and has great pace and knows how to score. She scored a million goals in high school and is doing a good job. I think she is first in the league with five assists, which at this stage after six games is really impressive. She does a good job for us and is the perfect player off the bench. She comes in just playing all over the field. She wins a ton of tackles and put herself in really good spots. She has been very good for us. That front line with CeCe (Kizer), Gabby (Little), Mary Kate (Smith) and Alley (Houghton) and Molly Martin, is really a potent offense for us."

On scoring percentage...
"I think we are leading the country in scoring. We didn't see that coming, but it certainly is something we are proud of. The guys are just relentless when we get in. They want to score and really our scoring percentage is good as well with the amount of shots we have taken. We have only given up one, which we are proud of that. Five shutouts is more than we had last year. The defense is doing really well. Marnie Merritt has been really good for us between the pipes for sure."
