SPOTLIGHT: Blue-Collar Coach Looks To Turn Around Softball Program

Windy Thees Brings Old-School Philosophy To Rebels

Julie Meyer is in her second season as an assistant coach with the Ole Miss softball team. She came to Oxford after serving as an assistant on Windy Thees' Memphis staff in 2011. With the Rebels, Meyer works primarily with the infielders and catchers, while assisting with hitting and camps.

"I am very excited about Julie joining me at Ole Miss," said Thees upon Meyer's hiring. "She is an unbelievable infield coach. I am excited to see how she can help our defense in the infield and behind the plate. She is very organized, and I think her approach will also help our hitters at the plate."

Meyer made an immediate impact with the Rebels' infield in her first year. Shortstop Allison Brown had a fantastic freshman year under Meyer's tutelage, breaking the Ole Miss freshman RBI record held previously by All-American Lauren Grill, and earned SEC All-Freshman honors. As a team, Ole Miss committed 14 fewer errors, helping lead the Rebels to an eight-win improvement from the previous season.

In 2011 with the Tigers, Meyer tutored shortstop Heather Mott to first team All-Conference USA honors and helped first baseman Jessica Phillips set the Tiger single-season record with 15 home runs. Defensively, Meyer coached an infield that recorded 10 or fewer errors at every position and set a school record for the most runners caught stealing.

Meyer joined Thees in Memphis after one season as a volunteer assistant coach and one season as a student assistant coach after a four-year playing career at the University of California. As a volunteer assistant for the Bears, she helped develop the catchers and infielders with everyday drills. Under the tutelage of Cal pitching coach John Reeves, she also assisted in calling the games.

As a first baseman/catcher for the Bears from 2004-08, Meyer produced record numbers for the Cal softball program. She finished her playing career ranked fourth all-time in the program's history with 25 home runs. She provided the heroics in the 2008 NCAA Regional Championship game when she hit a walk-off ninth inning single that sent the Bears to the Super Regional. In 2005, the Bears advanced to the College World Series and Meyer was the starter at first base in every game.

Meyer graduated with a B.A. in sociology in 2010. She has worked at various California softball clinics and has volunteered with Special Olympics as an instructor. She was elected as the captain of the Bears in 2007-08 and served as the softball representative to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. She was awarded the Donna Terry Scholarship for her outstanding team leadership in 2007.
