Ole Miss Falls to Arizona State in Tempe Regional
May 19, 2018

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State took the lead in the second and controlled things from there on out, handing Ole Miss a 7-1 defeat in the winner's bracket of the Tempe Regional Saturday afternoon.

The Rebels (31-24) fall into the loser's bracket and will play the winner of the Long Beach State vs. New Mexico State game. The game is scheduled for 9 p.m. CT in Tempe.

Kaitlin Lee received the start and was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs on six hits, striking out a pair. Ava Tillmann came on in relief to throw 1.2 innings, surrendering one run on one base knock, while Brittany Finney took to the circle for the final two innings, allowing a run on one hit.

The Sun Devils (45-11) got on the board early, plating a run in the second on a double down the left field line, a wild pitch and an RBI grounder to third base.

After Kaylee Horton lost a ball in the sun in foul territory that would have ended the third, it looked as though the Rebels had gotten out of the jam anyway on a nice play up the middle, with Dylinn Stancil flipping the ball to Paige McKinney with her glove. However, after a conference, McKinney was ruled to have been pulled off the bag and the run that came home was allowed, giving ASU a 2-0 lead.

While the Rebels had been able to work out of trouble a couple of times to keep the deficit manageable, the Sun Devils took control in the fourth. Following a pair of singles, Kindra Hackbarth launched a three-run homer to right, ending Lee's outing and putting ASU ahead 5-0.

The Sun Devils tacked on a run in the 6th via a sacrifice fly before Abbey Latham got the Rebels on the board with a solo home run to lead off the seventh. However, it would not be enough as ASU came out on top.

Quick Hits

- Arizona State scored in every inning except the first and the seventh
