OXFORD, Miss. - Coming off a Southeastern Conference series victory over visiting Arkansas, the Ole Miss softball team will now hit the road to Martin, Tenn., to face the UT Martin Skyhawks on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT.
"They are such a scrappy team," said Ole Miss head coach Windy Thees about UT Martin. "They're always an RPI top-100 team, and they're always battling in the Ohio Valley Conference to go to regionals. They're a tough team so we need to get our heads right and get ready to go to Martin and win a game."
Ole Miss (19-14) defeated UT Martin 3-2 on Feb. 23 at the Ole Miss Softball Complex as part of the Red and Blue Classic. Senior pitcher Shelby Jo Fenter got the win, striking out seven batters in 6.0 innings of work, while fellow senior Carly Hummel came in to get the save, her second of the season. At the plate, junior right fielder Jamie Morgan went 1-2 with two RBIs, and redshirt-freshman second baseman Alyssa Invergo was 1-1 with one run and one RBI.
On the season, senior RT Cantillo leads Ole Miss at the plate with a .506 batting average, which ranks second in the SEC. Junior third baseman Allison Brown is second on the team in batting average (.356), RBIs (21) and home runs (four), and leads the Rebels with 20 runs scored. Senior first baseman Londen Ladner has hit a team-high five home runs and driven in a team-high 22 runs.
In the circle, Hummel (8-6) has pitched a team-high 82.2 innings and struck out a team-high 80 batters. Fenter has a team-best ERA of 2.66.
UT Martin (13-15-1) has been led offensively by sophomore catcher Deven Wilson, who has a team-best batting average of .395, and a team-high 17 RBIs. Senior outfielder Kayla Wade has scored a team-high 20 runs, while junior corner infielders Kenzi Tate and Lauren Smith have each belted out four home runs. Freshman Elizabeth Wiegand (8-3) has been the Skyhawks' top pitcher, throwing 85.0 innings with a 3.05 ERA.
