Cox, McKinney Selected in Inaugural ASBA Draft
June 7, 2018

OXFORD, Miss. – On Wednesday night, Ole Miss senior standouts Elantra Cox and Paige McKinney were selected in the inaugural draft for the upstart American Softball Association, which will begin its first season this summer.

Both Cox and McKinney didn’t last in the draft pool for long, with Cox being selected in the second round by Moh-BEEL! USA with the eighth overall pick and McKinney being scooped up in the seventh round by Future 1’s.

Announced in November, the ASBA serves to increase the opportunities for players to continue their softball careers beyond college. The league consists of four teams, Moh-BEEL! USA, Outkast, E1 Pro Ballers and Future 1’s. Mobile, Alabama has been selected as the host site for the league’s inaugural season, set to run from June 15 to July 31.

Following sensational collegiate careers, both Cox and McKinney will have ample opportunity to make an immediate impact on their respective teams. Cox is one of the most decorated players in the history of Ole Miss softball, finishing her career as the program’s all-time leader in batting average, hits, runs, and stolen bases. She capped her career with her third-straight NFCA All-South Region selection, becoming the first Rebel to collect the honor three times.

Since taking over as Ole Miss’ everyday shortstop midway through her junior season, McKinney continuously turned heads with outstanding plays in the field and consistent performances at the plate. The Southaven, Mississippi native concluded her career with a .272 average, registering 81 runs and 22 RBIs in 214 appearances. McKinney performed just as well of the field as she did on it, earning Ole Miss Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors as well as being selected as the school’s nominee for the SEC’s McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Scholarship.
