Rebels Earn 7 Wins on Day One of FGCU Invite
Jan. 13, 2018

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Day one of the FGCU Invitational concluded Saturday with the Rebels earning seven wins in doubles and singles against FGCU, Kansas and South Carolina at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

Strong Doubles...
The Rebels began the day taking three of four doubles matches from FGCU. Sixth-ranked Arianne Hartono and Alexa Bortles downed Maja Ornberg and Madison Gallegos 6-2. Natalie Suk and Sabina Machalova, ranked No. 22, defeated Patricia Villar and Laura Falceto 6-3. Tereza Janatova and Allie Sanford rounded out the first set of matches with a 7-5 win against Sofia Blanno and Julianna Curtis.

Against Kansas, the Rebels took two of three matches. Suk and Machalova beat Despoina Vogasari and Tatiena Nikolaeva 6-3, and 58th-ranked Tea Jandric and Anna Vrbenska dominated Nina Khnelnitckaia and Amber Policare 6-1.

Vrbenska, Bortles Earn Singles Wins...
In singles, the Rebels battled against No. 15 South Carolina, but the Gamecocks won a couple close three-setters to take five of the seven. Vrbenska defeated Paige Cline 6-2, 7-6(3) and Bortles topped Rachel Rohrabacher 6-3, 6-4. Machalova and Suk both went the distance, but came up just short in third set supertiebreakers.

Courtside with Head Coach Mark Beyers...
"All-in-all it was not a bad first day. I thought we played some pretty good doubles. Singles was a little more up and down, but that is to be expected when it's been quite a while since we competed last. These type of quality matches early in the semester are so valuable."
