OXFORD, Miss. -- Up 3-0 on No. 5 ranked Alabama, the No. 42 ranked Ole Miss women’s tennis team was unable to close it out as the Crimson Tide rallied for a 4-3 win here Friday at the Gillom Sports Center.
With the match moved indoors due to the weather, the Rebels started quickly. Despite an 8-3 victory by Alabama’s No.1 duo and No. 4 ranked doubles team, the other Rebel doubles teams proved clutch. Mai El Kamash and Vief Vlaar prevailed 8-5 over Maya Jensen and Natalia Maynetto at No. 2 doubles, while Julia Jones and Iris Verboven took an 8-4 victory over Antonia Foehse and Emily Zabor at No. 3, to clinch the doubles point.
Up 1-0, the Rebels started well in singles. No. 39 ranked Caroline Rohde-Moe took out No. 20 Mary Anne Macfarlane 7-6(2), 6-2 while El-Kamash upset No. 36 Alexa Guarachi 7-6(6), 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
Leading 3-0, the Rebels only needed one more victory however, the Crimson Tide would continue to fight back. Jensen, ranked No. 77, rallied for a 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jones, while Emily Zabor took out Vief Vlaar 6-2, 6-2.
The Tide would tie the match at 3 following Foehse’s 6-4, 7-6(4) win over Rebel freshman Marija Milutinovic at four. Down to the No. 6 court, Alabama took the match 4-3 as Maynetto defeated Santa Shumilina 6-2, 6-4.
With the win Alabama moves to 9-1 and 1-0 in the SEC while the Rebels fall to 2-5 and 0-1 in conference play. The Rebels will be back in action on Sunday against No. 17 Auburn.
