Successful Day One for Rebels at ITA Fall Championships
Nov. 1, 2017

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – It was a successful day one for the Ole Miss women’s tennis team at the ITA National Fall Championships Wednesday with senior Arianne Hartono upsetting the No. 3 seed in singles and then both Hartono and Alexa Bortles and Natalie Suk and Sabina Machalova winning their doubles matches to advance to the second round.

Hartono takes out No. 3 seed…
In a battle between two All-Americans, Arianne Hartono took out the No. 3 seed, coming back to beat Karla Popovic of California 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round.  Popovic was ranked No. 5 in the preseason singles rankings.

Hartono got broken early in the first set, but had chances to break back later, before Popovic held for 6-3. Hartono gained an early break in the second set for a 2-1 lead, but Popovic broke back. The two traded service games until Hartono broke again for a 5-4 lead and served out it out 6-4 to force a decisive third set.

In the final set, Hartono grabbed the early momentum breaking Popovic to begin the set and never looked back on her way to winning it 6-1 for her seventh win in a row.  Hartono will face Veronica Miroshnichenko of Loyola Marymount in the second round Thursday.

Courtside with Hartono…
“It’s a great tournament. It’s not every day that you get to come out to Palm Springs, especially from Oxford, Mississippi. To get a win like this on the first day is great.”

Doubles times two…
Both doubles teams of Arianne Hartono/Alexa Bortles and Natalie Suk/Sabina Machalova were on the court at the same time a few courts away. Hartono and Bortles took out the No. 4 seeds, Babic and Blanco of Oklahoma State, in three sets.

The Rebel duo broke to start the match and went on to win the first set 6-2. The second set went back and forth, but the OSU duo broke at 5-4 to win it 6-4 and force the third set. They are playing a supertiebreaker for the third set in this tournament, and Hartono and Bortles won it 10-6 to finish off the victory.

Senior Natalie Suk and freshman Sabina Machalova defeated Anna Sanford and Olivia Sneed of Ohio State in straight sets in a re-match from the second round of qualifying at the All-American Championships. The Ohio State duo won that match 8-7(5). This tournament is a best of three sets, and the Rebel duo broke early in the first set and won it 6-2. In the second set, both teams traded breaks early, but Suk and Machalova got the final break and won it 7-5 to improve to 7-1 on the season.

At the net with head coach Mark Beyers
“Anytime you can go undefeated at an elite college event like this one where the best college tennis players in the country are together, it is a good day. Arianne beating the third seed in singles and then following that up with a win over the four seeds in double alongside Alexa Bortles once again shows she is one of the very best players in college tennis. I couldn’t be prouder of Nat and Sabina, getting revenge on the same Ohio State team that beat them a few weeks ago at the All American. Now we have to prove that we can play at this level again tomorrow.”
