Rebel Duo Reaches Quarterfinals at ITA Fall Championships
Nov. 2, 2017

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Senior Arianne Hartono and sophomore Alexa Bortles advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA National Fall Championships Thursday with a three-set win against NC State’s Anna Rogers and Claudia Wiktorin at the JW Marriott World Resort.

Unfortunately, Hartono lost her second-round singles match, and senior Natalie Suk and freshman Sabina Machalova dropped their second-round doubles match.

Hartono/Bortles into final eight…
After tough start to the day for Arianne Hartono with her singles loss, she bounced back in doubles with Alexa Bortles. The pair won a tight first set against NC State’s Anna Rogers and Claudia Wiktorin, breaking in the 10th game for 6-4. The NC State duo broke early in the second set and went on to win the set 6-1 to force a deciding third-set supertiebreaker, which Hartono and Bortles won 10-8 to improve to 6-3 this fall. They will face Eudice Chong and Victoria Yu (Wesleyan-CT) in the quarterfinals Friday.

In the other doubles match, Natalie Suk and Sabina Machalova lost to the No. 3 seeds, Kelly Chen and Samantha Harris of Duke, 6-4, 6-4. Suk and Machalova finished the fall 7-2.

Hartono drops second round singles match…
In the second round of singles, Arianne Hartono dropped her match to Loyola Marymount’s Veronica Miroshnichenko 6-3, 6-4. Hartono got broken at 3-3 in the first set and then Miroshnichenko held for 6-3, despite Hartono having a break point to get back on serve. In the second set, Hartono broke to go up 3-2, but she gave it back and then got broken again at 3-4. Miroschnichenko served for the match, but Hartono broke back. Unfortunately, she couldn’t hold serve as Mroschnichenko won it 6-4.

At the net with head coach Mark Beyers
“A tougher day for us today. At this point in the tournament everyone is good. Unfortunately, Ari wasn’t quite able to play at the same level as Wednesday. Even so, she had some opportunities to take this match into a third set, but couldn’t win some of the big points. In doubles, we split two very close matches. Arianne and Alexa were once again able to come thru in a supertiebreaker against a NC State team that has had a very good fall. Natalie and Sabina lost two close sets against a very good Duke team. It’s exciting to see their potential in only their second tournament together.”
