– Ole Miss is among the top 16 women’s tennis teams that will be in Madison, Wisconsin this weekend for the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.

The 12th-ranked Rebels will face the No. 3 seed, North Carolina, in the first round, Friday at 12:00 p.m. CT at the Nielson Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.

The ITA Division I National Women’s Team Indoor Championship is in its 31st year of existence. Fifteen teams qualified for the event by winning their respective 2018 ITA Kick-Off Weekend four-team regional.

Path to National Team Indoor…
Ole Miss earned its spot in the ITA National Team Indoor by winning the ITA kick-off “regional” at Stillwater, Oklahoma with a 4-3 win against TCU in the first round and a 4-1 win vs. Oklahoma State in the championship match.

National Team Indoor History…
The Rebels are making their 10th appearance in the National Team Indoor Championships overall and third under the current format. They qualified for this event in 1992-94, 1997-2000, 2012, and last year.

Last Time Out…
In their home opener last Saturday, Ole Miss (4-0) rallied from dropping the doubles point for a 4-2 win against Memphis at the Ole Miss Indoor Tennis Center. The Tigers added to their lead with a quick win on court two, but that would be it as the Rebels got straight set wins from Anna Vrbenska at No. 6, Tea Jandric at No. 4 and Alexa Bortles at No. 5 to pull ahead 3-2. Freshman Sabina Machalova had just gone to a third set on court two, when senior Arianne Hartono made sure that would not be necessary rallying from 5-3 down in the second set for a 6-4, 7-5 win to clinch the match.

Ranking the Rebels…
The ITA does not release a team ranking the week of the National Team Indoor, but in the latest USTA College Tennis op 25 team rankings, the Rebels are ranked No. 12. This marks the team’s highest national ranking since earning an ITA ranking of No. 12 on March 1, 2000. The ITA did announce the first individual rankings of the 2018 season, and senior Arianne Hartono is ranked No. 25 in singles and No. 11 in doubles with sophomore Alexa Bortles. Tea Jandric is ranked No. 124 in singles. Natalie Suk and Sabina Machalova are ranked No. 27 in doubles.

Scouting North Carolina…
North Carolina is seeded No. 3 in the 16-team field and making its fourth-straight appearance at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 5 in the latest ITA National Team Rankings and the USTA Top 25. They boast six individual players in the singles rankings led by No. 6 ranked freshman, Alle Sanford. She is also ranked No. 20 in doubles with Sara Daavettila. Carolina is the only team nationally to have two players in the top 10 and five players ranked in the top-80 in singles.

Rebels vs. the Tar Heels
Last May the Rebels faced North Carolina in the NCAA second round. In a match that was much closer than the final score, the Rebels dropped a tight doubles point, but battled in singles before the Tar Heels came away with a 4-1 win at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

Courtside with Head Coach Mark Beyers
“It’s great to be back in the final 16 of the National Team Indoor Championship, with all the top teams in the nation here. At the NCAA’s we lost a very close match to UNC, and we are excited to get another shot at one of the best teams in the country. The doubles point will be big on Friday. If we play well, we have a chance to beat any team in the nation.”
