No. 12 Rebels Head to Alabama for Pair of Matches

OXFORD, Miss. – After opening Southeastern Conference play with two tough losses, the No. 12-ranked Ole Miss women’s tennis team heads to Alabama this weekend in search of their first league win.

The Rebels will face the Crimson Tide Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Alabama Tennis Stadium, and then travel to Auburn to face the Tigers Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.

Last Time Out…
In their conference opener, the Rebels dropped a tough 4-3 match to the defending NCAA Champion, Florida, and followed up with a 4-0 loss to then-No. 13 South Carolina to fall to 9-3 overall. In the loss to Florida, senior Arianne Hartono defeated the No. 9 ranked player in the nation. 

Scouting Alabama…
Alabama opened conference play on the road facing then-No. 15 Kentucky and then-No. 4 Vanderbilt. In Lexington, the Crimson Tide dropped a heartbreaker, 4-3, and later fell to the Commodores, 4-0, in Nashville, Tennessee. The Crimson Tide is led by junior Andie Daniell, who is ranked No. 124 with a 10-3 record at No. 1. 

Rebels vs. Crimson Tide…
Thursday will mark the 49th meeting between the two schools as the Rebels lead the series 31-17. In the last meeting (March 3, 2017), Ole Miss edged the Crimson Tide 4-3 in Oxford.

Scouting Auburn…
Auburn comes into the second weekend of SEC play ranked No. 18 at 12-4 overall and 1-1 in the SEC. The Tigers are coming off a dramatic 4-3 win at Kentucky. Auburn is led by 80th-ranked Jaeda Daniel with a 16-9 record.

Rebels vs. Tigers…
The Rebels lead the all-time series with Auburn 27-17, but the Tigers have won two straight, including a 4-0 a win last year in Oxford.

Rebels in the Rankings…
The Rebels are ranked No. 12 in this week’s Oracle/ITA Rankings and No. 13 in the USTA Top 25 poll. In the latest individual rankings, Arianne Hartono is ranked No. 13 in singles and No. 11 in doubles with Alexa Bortles. Tea Jandric is ranked No. 69 and Sabina Machalova is ranked No. 106.
