Steven McRoberts Weekly Press Conference
Aug. 28, 2017

Ole Miss volleyball head coach Steven McRoberts met with members of the media on Monday as part of his weekly press conference. Coach McRoberts discussed the Rebels' 3-1 start this past weekend.

On the first weekend of play...
"I am really excited about the new season here. It was a solid start for our team with five new players in the mix from last year's squad. Losing Aubrey (Edie) as setter, a four-year starter, is like losing the point guard or quarterback that you've had for a long period of time. I am really pleased that we had two people, Jordan Fate and Lauren Bars, both step in; we are running a different offense that is a two-setter system this year and they both did a nice job. I thought our defense played really well. We are leading the league in digs right now and our offense, as the weekend went on, kind of caught up to our defense. We had five match points against North Dakota, who is a very good team and in my opinion they are going to win their league and represent their conference again in the NCAA tournament. We just didn't finish the deal. It is disappointing, but considering all the changes that we made, if you were to tell me that we would go 3-1 and get a lot of play in this weekend, we might have taken that. Going into the match yesterday Caroline Adams was leading the league in digs, I think she fell back to third or fourth. Florida A&M was smart in that they didn't hit the ball at her very much. Emily Stoup who was used sparingly last year is playing a much bigger role for us this year. She also made the All-Tournament team."

On the senior class...
"Our two seniors, Lexi Thompson and Kate Gibson. Kate entered the 1000/1000 club with 1000 kills and 1000 digs and Lexi should do that this weekend. They both kind of struggled early in the tournament and I felt like it showed a lot of growth from a program standpoint and a young player standpoint, that we won our first match and came back Saturday. We had a good bounce back match to win after being on the court for about 7 hours the day before and won 3-0 and 3-0 the next two days. We should be fresh coming out to practice tomorrow."

On newcomer Bayleigh Scott...
"Bayleigh Scott was our fourth middle we had going into preseason. We were kind of struggling with Louisiana Tech by committee and by the time we got to her and put her in she just played really well and ended up leading the team in hitting percentage on the weekend.

On the two-setter system...
"The setter always stays on the back row. It allows us to keep an extra attacker in. We weren't real confident going into a two-hitter phase, that means the setter is on the front row with two front row hitters versus having that right side so you have three the whole time. Caitlin Wernentin, our transfer from UNLV, did a really nice job on the right side for most of the weekend. It just allows us to keep the floor spread on the block and takes a little bit of pressure off of our young middles."

On the upcoming weekend...
"It is going to be a tough tournament this weekend as we head to play Virginia Tech who is 3-0 and SMU who was a NCAA tournament team last year and Arkansas State, who also has a very good program. (Arkansas State) started off 1-2, but they have played two (NCAA) tournament teams at Kentucky, who is basically picked second, but right there to win the league with Florida. We expect it to be a tough weekend. Another weekend to kind of show where we are at. We have a lot of youth playing and I am excited about the direction that we are going."
