Steven McRoberts Weekly Press Conference
Sept. 4, 2017

Ole Miss volleyball head coach Steven McRoberts met with members of the media on Monday as part of his weekly press conference. Coach McRoberts discussed the Arkansas State Invitational and previewed the upcoming Ole Miss Classic.

On Virginia Tech match...
"I want to congratulate Coach (Matt) Luke on his first victory, that is a great start for the football team. I also want to congratulate Coach (Matt) Mott on the great start with his team as well. We had an ok weekend. Going into last weekend, I was thinking if we could go 2-1, it would be a solid weekend for our team. We won the first one against Virginia Tech. We were down two sets to one, up 13-12 in the fourth set and then we ended the match on a 27-7 run. Which at that level of play--all the teams were about equal--is really crazy. It has been years since I can remember being in a fifth set and being up 10-0 going to 15. The ball didn't even come to our side I think 7 of those points. They were helping us out, we were serving aggressive. Lauren Bars, a freshman, had three or four aces during that run which really helped us.”

On SMU and Arkansas State matches…
“After a five-setter, having to turn right around and play SMU, another team that is about as equal as we are. We won the first set and were up 23-21 in the second set and let that slip away. Then it just kind of felt from then on that we had lost that momentum and lost a close four set match. Then the next day we played the host, Arkansas State, who also has a very good program. I believe they have only lost twice in the last two years at home. We came out really flat. They came out excited. We handled them pretty easy at home last year, and I think they had the motivation from that along with losing the first two matches of the tournament. They did not want to go 0-3, I know that. We didn't match their energy. We are a young team as far as five new players in the mix. It is something we will learn from because that’s the SEC on a Friday on the road. You are sitting around in a hotel for most of the day and you just have to figure out how to come out with energy and urgency, especially early in the match or those teams will just steal the momentum from you, which is what happened.”

On Stroup and Thompson…
“Sophomore Emily Stroup, had another great weekend from the right side, she is just really tearing it up. Has to be one of the top two or three on the ride side in the conference right now. I am really proud of her and the way she has grown as a player from freshman to sophomore year. Also, Lexi Thompson getting in that 1,000 dig, 1,000 kill club to match what Kate Gibson did the first weekend. She had a solid match against SMU and Arkansas State in those two losses.”

On Ole Miss Classic this weekend…
“We come back home this week and host our second tournament. It is kind of a different format as we are playing Thursday and Friday, with the football game happening on Saturday. We have an early game on Thursday (11 a.m.) and then a 7 p.m. game that night. It will be Northwestern State in the morning and then Austin Peay in the evening. Austin Peay is coming in playing really well. They have a win over Missouri, co-champions of our league last year, so that will be a great test for us. It’s another opportunity to get a good win in our non-conference and then we finish up with Mercer on Friday night.”
