Rebels Set To Host No. 13 Florida, South Carolina This Weekend Ole Miss Returns Home To Face Eastern Division Foes
Oct. 12, 2011
OXFORD, Miss. – After a three week stretch with five-of-six matches away from the friendly confines of the Gillom Sports Center, the Ole Miss volleyball team returns home this weekend to host a pair of contests against No. 13 Florida and South Carolina.
The Rebels will take the court to face the Gators at 7 p.m. on Friday before facing South Carolina at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Admission to all contests is free to the public.
“It’s always good to be home at the Gillom Center,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. “While we didn’t win last weekend we made some strides and we’d like to build on that. One of the best things about playing in the SEC is you have one of the top teams in the country coming to your place.”
Ole Miss continues to be lead by senior middle blocker Regina Thomas who is tops in the Southeastern Conference in hitting and blocks coming into the weekend. Thomas is hitting at a .380 clip so far this season after leading the league in hitting a year ago. She also is putting down 1.14 blocks per set which leads the conference.
Joining her on the attack is sophomore outside hitter Kara Morgan who continues to emerge as a weapon in the Rebel offense. Morgan put down a career-high 18 kills this past Sunday in an upset bid of No. 19 Tennessee on the road. The performance came on the heels of a previous career-best 15 kills against Mississippi State just a week earlier.
Allegra Wells leads the Rebels with 2.50 kills per set this season and has put down a team-leading 160 kills on the year, while junior outside hitter Whitney Craven continues to return to form with a pair of double-digit kill performances last weekend at Kentucky and Tennessee.
Leading the back row defense for the Rebels is senior libero Morgan Springer who averages 3.98 digs per set, the fourth best average in the SEC this season.
Fans in attendance at the matches have a couple of chances to win prizes as part of the weekend promotions. Friday fans will have a chance to serve for a seat cushion to use in the stands, while Sunday fans will have the opportunity to make a mad grab for cash in a money booth.
