Ole Miss Head Coach Joe Getzin

Opening statement…
“We had a tough weekend on the road. We lost a close one at Kentucky in four sets. We played them much better than we played them here. We had our chances in a couple of the sets that we lost. The team played and competed well up until the fourth set. I was pleased with the effort. We’re starting to see a little bit better attacking numbers again. Our two freshmen middles (Nakeyta Clair and Ty Laporte) performed very well.

“Then we went down to LSU and lost kind of a heartbreaker in four (sets). We had set point in the fourth game and let it slip away. We ended up losing 26-24. The freshmen played extremely well. We just didn’t make a couple of plays in the fourth set. When you have set point you have to take care of the ball. We didn’t do that. There were a lot of reasons for that. When you’re not used to winning, it becomes harder and plays just don’t happen. We have to improve and keep battling. It doesn’t get any easier for us. We have the No. 16 ranked (Florida) Gators coming in on Sunday. We open up with Tennessee on Friday night, who just beat Florida to keep them from going undefeated. It will be two good matches here at home. We always like playing at home. The support that we get from the fans at the Gillom Center makes a huge difference for us.”

On motivating the team moving forward…
“Anytime you aren’t winning, confidence is a very fragile thing. We’re not trying to look at the big picture. We’re trying to look at the process and how we’re battling each ball. We saw some really good things from that this weekend. If we keep doing that, we’ll keep seeing good things.”

On preparing for Tennessee and Florida…
“They are both very good teams. They are very physical teams. Right now I’m not as concerned about what is on the other side of the net, but what is on our side. We have to get our side cleaned up. If we can get the ball to our freshmen, who are playing in the middle right now, they’ve put up good numbers. That opens up some of the other opportunities for us. If we take care of our first contact, we’ll be in good shape.”
