Steven McRoberts Weekly Press Conference
Nov. 13, 2017

Ole Miss volleyball head coach Steven McRoberts me with the media Monday to recap the Rebels’ second win against Texas A&M this year and look ahead to this weekend’s matches at Tennessee and No. 6 Kentucky.

Opening statement…
“Good morning congratulations to both the men's and women's cross country teams on qualifying for NCAA’s again. Congratulations to our football team on the win on Saturday and also congratulations again to our women's soccer team and Coach Mott for the season they had and qualifying for NCAA’s as well.

On the Georgia match…
"A microcosm of our season, we played well at Georgia on Friday, but just couldn’t get over the hump. We tried three different lineups, a different lineup every set just to see if we could figure something out that might get us over that hump we have been talking about for a month and a half. Since SEC play has started we have been close a lot and we just can't seem to win that close one. We have probably left three or four SEC wins on the table and that hurts when you’re trying to make your first NCAA tournament since 2010. We lost in three at Georgia but a very competitive match. Georgia is a good program. They made a new hire within their volleyball program and he has done a nice job giving them some confidence. They also have some really good young players that have come in this year and I think they are going to be successful from here on out.”

On the bounce-back win against Texas A&M…
“We had a good bounce-back match yesterday. It was our second win over Texas A&M this season. Going into this season we were 0-13 versus A&M, so to beat them twice in one season I think can be considered part of the legacy that our seniors will be leaving us with. Emily Stroup continues to play really well for us having a breakout sophomore season. Nicole Purcell had to step in because Caroline Adams was sitting out due to an injury. That was a game-time decision. That was the first time all year Caroline had not played for us, to make the adjustment that fast and for the team to adjust quickly and still get the win says a lot about our young ladies.”

On mentality of team…
"This group no matter what happens has fought very well through adversity. They bring a lot of effort every day with great attitudes. I think that is the main reason why here at the end of the year they still play really hard and with a lot of pride for Ole Miss. These young ladies every time they go out they don't think about if we are in the NCAA tournament or not, they just want to play and want to win. They are playing for Ole Miss, one another and for their families.”

On this weekend’s matches…
“We are expecting to finish strong. We have a tough road trip coming up where we are at Tennessee and at Kentucky. The Kentucky match on Sunday was picked up by a national network (SEC Network). It will be a tough match they are in line to win the conference with Florida at this point. They are a program that not only is going to do well in our conference but, Coach (Craig) Skinner has them competing this year for a national championship in my opinion. It will be a tough test. We have always had trouble at Tennessee so our mind needs to be on the Friday match first.”

Looking ahead to senior night match…
“We finish up next Wednesday against South Carolina at home. I want to get the word out early about the match as we celebrate our two seniors Lexi Thompson and Kate Gibson who are re-writing a lot of records in our record book. We sure would love to have a good crowd for them as we send them out hopefully with a victory over South Carolina.”
