Volleyball’s Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against Miami
9/10/2025 | Volleyball
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Ole Miss volleyball nearly capped a reverse sweep in the SEC/ACC Showdown at the Net against Miami, but fell short, 3-2, at Knight Sports Complex on Wednesday.
Shayla Meyer highlighted Ole Miss' (3-3, 0-0 SEC) efforts with her most complete effort thus far in the young season. The junior veteran recorded 12 kills and eight digs, both season bests, while serving a career-high four aces. Gabi Placide recorded multiple sets with at least five kills for 18 in total, as she reached double-figure kills for the sixth time in six games. Cammy Niesen led all players on the court with 19 digs and Mokihana Tufono added 33 assists, but it was Miami (5-1, 0-0 ACC) who eked out a narrow victory.
The Rebels met the hostile environment early, building a quick 5-2 lead behind a pair of kills from Meyer. However, the Hurricanes quickly pushed back with a 10-2 run of their own to force the Rebels into a timeout. While the Rebels shaved the lead back to 15-13 behind .455 hitting from Gabi Placide, the Hurricanes were able to put them away with a 25-18 set victory.
Despite a quick 3-0 lead for the Hurricanes, the Rebels pushed back into the match in the second set. Melia Johnson tallied three kills and Meyer added two more to give Ole Miss a 10-8 lead. However, a key 5-1 run by Miami helped them turn the tide, ultimately growing the lead to 19-14. Despite a much-improved hitting percentage, the Hurricanes lead was too big to overcome, as the hosts took the second set 25-20.
The Rebels gained some momentum back behind four Miami service errors and took an 8-5 advantage in the third set. That helped spark the offense, who never relinquished the lead from there. Meyer tallied her first service ace of the evening while Placide knocked down four more kills. Ole Miss took advantage of Miami's seven attack errors to come away with its first set victory of the evening, 25-20.
Rejuvenized, Ole Miss stayed on the offensive to start the fourth set. Errors on both sides of the court mounted up, allowing the Hurricane to take an eight-point lead while teetering on the edge of finishing the match. The Rebels would then string together five unanswered points to tie the match at two, with a 25-23 set victory. Meyer scored two of Ole Miss' final five points off service aces to surpass her career mark.
The fifth set began with a back-and-forth battle between the squads. Miami built a four-point lead midway through the set to gain momentum which it wouldn't let up, and despite an unsuccessful challenge by the Hurricane, they would come away with the set victory, fashioning the final score of 3-2.
The Rebels head home for the first home match of the regular season, welcoming Louisiana to the Gillom Athletic Performance Center on Friday for a 6 p.m. CT clash. The game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus.
