Baseball Gets Opening Day Dub Over Charleston Southern
2/18/2022 | Baseball
Tim Elko’s Solo Bomb Highlights 9-3 Rebel Win
Diamond was superb through three innings Friday, and when he ran into some trouble in the fourth, the Ole Miss offense already had supplied him with six runs.
Diamond, a junior right-hander, only allowed one baserunner in the first three frames, that coming in the form of a Ryan Waldschmidt leadoff walk in the third.
In the meantime, the Rebels had begun to build their lead. Jacob Gonzalez grounded out to score Peyton Chatagnier, who had walked, to give Ole Miss a 1-0 lead through one inning.
Three more runs in the second for the Rebels would ultimately be all the runs they'd need in this one. Buccaneers starter Bryce Brock helped out with two hit batters and a walk to load things up with no outs. A Reagan Burford fly out to left got the first run home. Base hits by Chatagnier and Justin Bench got the other two in.
The big hit for the Bucs off Diamond in the fourth was a double to left that got two CSU runs home. Ole Miss led 6-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
The Rebels then answered with two runs of their own. A Gonzalez single scored Justin Bench who had earlier reached on a base hit. Gonzalez stole second, and TJ McCants got him home with a single.
To start the top of the sixth inning, junior right-hander Jack Washburn took over for Diamond with Ole Miss up 8-2. Diamond ended his successful outing allowing two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Tim Elko, perhaps not surprisingly, delivered the Rebels their first home run of the season. His round-tripper made it 9-2 in the bottom of the sixth, as he touched them all and the crowd roared its approval.
Another right-handed junior pitcher, Mitch Murrell, started the seventh for the Rebels. With one out in the frame, Waldschmidt sent one over the left field wall to cut the Ole Miss lead to six runs at 9-3. But Murrell got out of it with no further damage.
After Murrell went two innings, freshman right-hander Mason Nichols entered in the ninth to finish things up for the Rebels. After a leadoff single from Tyrell Brewer, the Jackson Prep product got the next three Buccaneers out to end it.
McCants and Bench, with two hits each, paced the Rebels. But four errors by Ole Miss were a blemish on the day's effort defensively.
Diamond got the opening day win for the Rebels, while Brock took the loss for the Bucs.
Ole Miss and Charleston Southern will return to Swayze on Saturday, facing off at 1:30 p.m. CT. The game will be available for streaming on SEC Network +.
