Softball Drops Series Opener At No 19 Auburn

3/31/2023 | Softball

Smith Homers in Loss

AUBURN, Ala. – Ole Miss softball dropped the series opener to No. 19 Auburn, falling 7-1 to the Tigers Friday night at Jane B. Moore Field.

Auburn (27-9, 5-2 SEC) opened the scoring in the second inning, going up 3-0 on a pair of home runs. Still with no outs in the inning, Ole Miss (20-15, 1-6 SEC) turned to Makenna Kliethermes in the circle. She quickly retired the next three batters to send the Rebels back to the plate.

First pitch swinging to start the third inning, Paige Smith hit a laser over the fence in left to put Ole Miss on the board; however, it would prove to be the Rebels' only run of the game.

The Tigers' offense continued to use the long ball in the fourth. Auburn hit two more home runs to open up a 7-1 lead. Grace Sparks took over in the circle and pitched 3.2 innings and only allowed one run.

After holding Auburn in the bottom of the fifth, Ole Miss loaded the bases as Jamie Mackay was hit by a pitch, Tate Whitley singled and Mikayla Allee walked. With one out, Mya Stevenson hit a foul ball off that injured the home plate umpire. Following a 17-minute break from play, the at-bat resumed. Stevenson was unable to bring in any runs, but Tenly Grisham advanced home to score on a passed ball and make it 8-2.

Neither team would score the rest of the way, as Sparks kept Auburn off the board, but the Rebels couldn't get anything going offensively.

Ole Miss looks to even the series Saturday, April 1, at 3 p.m. CT. Fans can catch the game broadcast on SEC Network.
