Postgame Quotes vs. South Carolina

OLE MISS HEAD COACH LANE KIFFIN
Opening Statement:
"Alright, you know, a really good win. To win by sixteen points in the SEC, it's a really good job by the team. I think that it's challenging every week in this conference. It's always been that way, but now more than ever, we see that. With scores tonight, it seems to be that way all the time. These guys took Alabama down to the wire and were ahead by eight by the end of last week, so they got some really elite defensive players. I thought our defense really showed up today. Afterwards, on the TV interview, I said I felt like our fans and our defense really showed up today. Our offense in the passing game really didn't; we had some really bad rhythm. I did think our offensive line did some good things. We know third downs were not good. A number of those were in some fourth-down situations where they didn't make three really critical fourth-down conversions, but inconsistency in the passing game that started in the third quarter. We ran great in the first half and threw okay, but in the third quarter, they really started playing a lot of man and stopping and running. You have to beat them in the pass game when they do that. Trinidad [Chambliss] was a little off today, and when that happens, you need to run the ball really well and play good defense. So, you know, if you're plus 200 in rushing, 258 to 50, running a ball in six sacks to none, that's a really good job on both lines of scrimmage. What was really challenging in this room in the team meeting was 'let's try to dominate on the line of scrimmage and not leave it up to skilled people in the game.' I thought they did that, and our defense kept answering the call in the second half, which was great to see. That's what you want to see. You don't always want it to be one side. That radio guy said, 'This is five Novembers in a row we've been relative.' So, we have to finish this off and get better and play really well in the weeks to come."
On what he was telling Trinidad Chambliss on the sidelines after the muff:
"I just said, 'Hey, you haven't played really well at this point here, you know? Let's make really good decisions here.' We put the ball on the ground a little bit there, running the ball there, so in just a couple of drives there, we didn't call the best of plays. That happens sometimes."
On Ole Miss fans showing up and their response:
"I thought it was great. I thought that, you know, like I said, the challenge is if you have all these things where you say you are going to be an elite team and things we have to do. If we are going to have an elite environment, you have to get there early because that starts in warm ups with the other team and how you feel it. I thought when we came back out, it was really intense, and I looked up, and it was loaded. It was great to see. I think teams feed off that, especially defensively. We think about a lot of elite, loud environments and you think over years of time, a lot of times they usually have really good defenses. I think defensive players especially respond to that; it was great to see. I probably got us a penalty there at the end because I was just excited that we made that interception. Those don't happen a lot around here lately. When we did it, the student section was right there. I just told them to go down; I didn't tell them to jump into the stands. They did that. We got the penalty, so I just threw the ball up there too. They aren't going to give us two penalties. Sometimes, you gotta have fun."
On Ole Miss LB Andrew Jones:
"I like that story a lot when guys come here and things don't go the way they want early, and they're not playing as much, and they respond. You've got two choices at that point, and this happens a lot in life. You can sit there and complain, you can pout, you're not going to get rewarded, and you're gonna play less. Or you can work really hard in practice, and when you get your special teams chances, you can play really well, and they're going to earn more time, and he did that. I love it when that happens because guys go two ways at that point. Sometimes, they go in the tank, they pout, and sometimes they end up not here. It's really cool what he's been doing."
On Trinidad Chambliss struggling:
"Everybody's not going to play great, you know? The same things happen in whatever sports you guys play: golf, tennis, whatever. You don't play the same every time. Sometimes, you have some days off a little bit, and then you need to have your defensive play well, and you're running game play well. I think we have a really good feel for that and don't just play calls when we feel that. I feel that down there and then we take the ball out of there a little bit, and get what you would call conservative, so it's not as exciting to watch. I think we got boo'd once; I understand. I felt the same way. You're playing the game because you understand the game, and you're playing really well on defense. The last thing you want to do is throw a pick and turn it over and then start getting in a sack game, which is what they feed off of. A team feeds off of sacks, especially with number six. We gave none up today, and part of that was by being conservative."
OLE MISS RB KEWAN LACY
On his long touchdown run:
"My coaches always preach: 'just make one defender miss, win your one-on-ones'. I saw my one-on-one and I won it. I saw grass, so I just, you know, got it to the endzone."
On his increased role this season:
"Really just taking every game one day at a time. Being intentional with my preparation, you know. Going out there just doing my one eleven. So I feel like throughout the season, I'm just getting better and better throughout each game."
On keeping the offense going when the pass game is struggling:
"I always come out there with the mentality that I gotta do what I gotta do. Do my job. It's always that pressure on me."
On the offense's slow start:
"We just didn't execute. We were prepared all week, especially with the bi-week, we were focused. We just didn't come out and play fast and execute, and that's on me as a quarterback. I have to do a better job at executing every play."
On the team's approach to preparing this week:
"Just having that mindset, you know, we still go out there and do better and learn from what we did wrong in the games. Just trying to go 1-0 each week. Instilling that is a very important part."
OLE MISS LB SUNTARINE PERKINS
On what Coach Lane Kiffin told him after he got an interception:
"He told me to run to the student section and jump in the stands."
On how it feels to get his first sack of the season:
"It feels really good. Just be where your feet are and whenever your time comes make a play."
On the improvement from the defensive front:
"I feel like we've improved a lot. We had six sacks today. I think that's the most sacks this season. Just like I said, coming in every week ready to work and just be where your feet are."
On his message to his teammates after the Georgia game:
"Just stay together. Don't let one game affect who we are. Just come in every day ready to work."
OLE MISS QB TRINIDAD CHAMBLISS
On what he made of the offense:
"Yeah, not our prettiest performance on offense. We just really couldn't execute on some crucial downs, and that's a lot on me. I didn't have my best game, and I got to be better in getting all the guys, you know, going and making sure that we're executing."
On being able to trust Kewan Lacy:
"Yeah, it helps me a lot. When we have an explosive back like Kewan [Lacy], it takes pressure off me when you know you might be struggling like we were today. We popped that big run towards the fourth quarter, and that was huge. And it just helps a lot, to be honest, to have a great back, and shout out to our o-line, making holes and blocking defenders and moving guys up front."
On how the defense played:
"Yeah, I'm so proud of them. They stepped up today, and it was really them who carried the whole game. You know, offense, we really couldn't get stuff going. And they were, you know, getting stops and sacking the quarterback, putting pressure on him, and just making it foggy and, you know, the coverage and what our DBs did a great job with route coverage. And yeah, just credit to our defense today.
On having an off game:
"Yeah, I just couldn't click tonight with some of my receivers and some of the quarterback runs that we had, just an off night for me. And I can't have that, you know, going forward, you know, down the stretch of the season. So, I just have to be better, you know, executing and just playing better ball."
SOUTH CAROLINA HEAD COACH SHANE BEAMER
Opening Statement:
"Obviously a very disappointing night. Credit to Ole Miss. They made plays when they needed to make them, and prepared the right way. Came in here expecting to win and we got this thing to the fourth quarter just like we said we needed to do. 20-14 going into the fourth quarter and we didn't finish. We gotta perform a whole lot better."
On giving up points off the muffed punt:
"Yeah disappointing, we made some mistakes on special teams. But that has not been like us. Give them credit they made some plays there and we have been really good at covering kicks. Not really sure what happened on that one. We let that ball get outside but they made some plays and have good players. We have been a lot better than that on special teams. Need to be better."
On getting the ball back in the first quarter after the interception:
"Yeah it was pretty disappointing. Free plays right there. We get the ball, we get a turnover, we are in the two-minute mode and went nowhere. That was a great opportunity right there that we squandered."
On Dylan Stweart entering the game:
"I was really proud of Dylan. He had a little upper body injury that he aggravated yesterday. He truly was a game time decision and I am proud of him and the way he battled it out tonight because he did not feel good and was not 100%. So really, really, really proud of Dylan Stewart and him not feeling great tonight but gutting it out and trying to find us a way to win a football game."
SOUTH CAROLINA WR NYCK HARBOR
On bouncing back from the early drop:
"You know you drop some. That was on me. I told everybody on the team I said I'm going to go make it up so that's what I did. You can't hide after mistakes like that and it is what it is. I made up for it and just need to continue to make plays and get your head out of the gutter after the first one."
On if he asked for the ball before the touchdown catch:
"I told everyone. I trust in the coaches whatever they call and we are gonna go out and execute. I told him to look for me again and it is what it is."
On how he keeps the younger guys on the team motivated as a veteran presence:
"We have three more games. We are not where we want to be record wise or playing wise but the season is not over so we have to keep telling everyone and emphasizing to everyone that the season isn't over and we have to play complementary football and I feel as if we haven't played a complete game. I feel like we are going to get one and we have to go into the bye week and get healthy and our minds right and go wreck somebody's season. We got 3 games to go to prove ourselves and we are gonna go out there and do it."
SOUTH CAROLINA LB JUSTIN OKORONKWO
On approach going into the fourth quarter:
"We didn't get tired. It just comes down to we have to finish the game. All during practice and all during the week we definitely trained for that scenario. We knew we were going to have a chance to win the game. Just because of how we prepared and how we approach every game. It just comes down to finishing."
On if it was deflating to go back on the field after the muffed punt:
"No, not at all. Our defense's mentality is to just put the ball down. No matter what the scenario or situation is. Just play the next play and look forward not backwards."
On if he thinks he needs to prove something to himself to get things turned around:
"Yeah definitely, I feel like we are definitely another team 3-6 now. Yeah we are definitely better than that. If we look at our history of games it always comes down to the fourth quarter. We just have to finish the four quarters. We were right there, we just needed to finish."
On how all of their losses feel the same:
"Of course it is frustrating after a game but we just have to keep going. Just approach the next game. Just go 1-0, look forward. Don't let the past games affect you."
